Chronicles of Clipperton College continued

Just some thoughts/processes since playing around with Weebly …

  • About page: content of staff, hours, facilities etc. straight on to the About page, rather than creating a new page for each subject.
  • Combining the volunteer and donate pages as Contribute or Help Us.
  • Making use of templates on each page at the moment, to give an idea of the structural elements – what might suit on each page.
  • Explored some free apps: Colour Block and Simple Table for example.
  • Events page: considering putting the calendar straight onto the events page and if it is possible to move the events page elsewhere.
  • Designing certain aspects of the site: school logo, colour scheme, headers, font.
  • Feel of the website: that the library is fun!! Make it appealing for a younger audience.

Weebly, online!

Yesterday the on-campus class took the next bold step in our website creation, signing up with Weebly, the platform for our school website. It was really quite easy, as the sign up process had similarities to WordPress the class was online in no time. Soon enough, everyone was full swing into choosing themes, making pages, adding images (that were approved for noncommercial reuse of course!) and customising headers. After having done the flowchart it all seems pretty easy, just a whole lot of dragging and dropping and all … at least for the bones of the site. Just now, I’m going to continue setting up the structure, and hopefully get something published so I can share my URL with everyone (I was having some technical difficulties publishing my page yesterday, anyone else have that problem?) and get this site under way … here goes!

School website flowchart: revised

Okay, so take two (or maybe even three, I’ve lost count). This is the latest installment of my flowchart for the school website after looking at the specifications for competency task 2 of (ICAWEB418A) Use Development Software and IT Tools to Build a Basic Website. I’m expecting there to be more changes as I progress – perhaps simplifying the structure where possible since it is now rather complex. Pages have either been shifted, added or removed from the initial diagram. Also if anyone is interested I used an free version of an online program called Lucidchart. I had been using Microsoft Word but I felt very limited within the confines of the A4 or A3 page.

WebBuildingSchoolSite - Page 1 (4)

Last lesson we had a look at a Youtube video published by Weebly called Beginner’s Guide to Weebly. The video gave some insight into how the school website will be constructed. I got the impression that it is relatively easy to use as it bears some resemblance to WordPress but even then some of the drag and drop functions and customisation tools that were discussed are just so simple! I do feel more confident now in putting the website together, it will be a lot of trial and error but it’s not quite so daunting now that I’m aware of what we will all be dealing with.

The next step is to consider the content for each page …
